The USS Sunfish readies for her first patrol, post-shakedown.

Somebody once explained to me the difference between
ship
and
boat
. He said that you can put a boat on a ship, but you can’t put a ship on a boat. I have no idea if that is true, or if he was just a blowhard, which he was.

Where’s the rest of your sub, Bub?

I believe that is the unofficial way. Sailors always call subs boat for some reason.

Easier to remember is ships go on the water, boats go in the water.

Barge? BARGE? That, sir, is an amphibious assault support vessel.
But when it's not being used in that capacity it's just a... barge.

Right? This happened two years ago, and I read her total tax liability was around $60k. Hello, Craigslist...

I don’t buy this explanation. See the Blue Marlin for example.

Yeah, but the

Still, the USS Cole is clearly a ship and in this case it is on a ship.
/Yo dawg, I hear you like ships

A little googling turns up numerous answers to the question of ship vs boat, some along the lines of what I said, others who say that the Navy dictates that anything over a certain length at the waterline is a ship, anything shorter is a boat. Submariners are a breed amongst themselves, so they may call their subs “boats” just to be contrary. But I also found this most excellent Winston Churchill quote:
“Enemy submarines are to be called U-boats. The term ‘submarine’ is to be reserved for Allied underwater vessels. U-boats are those dastardly villains who sink our ships, while submarines are those gallant and noble craft which sink theirs.”

That is a brilliant quote.
